Monoswezi is an african/scandinavian quintet based in Norway of musicians originally from Mozambique, Norway, Sweden and Zimbabwe. Monoswezi seeks a musical expression, where respect for tradition is combined with different references and experiences from pop, jazz and modern Western music. In addition to traditional music, Monoswezi performs music composed by the band members, with a strong improvisational approach. Very often, their music is accompanied by dancing and participation by the audience. That way - there is little distinction between the performer and the audience, both are often actively involved in the music-making.
Lineup:
Hope Masike - vocals, mbira, percussion (Zimbabwe)
Calu Tsemane - vocals, percussion (Mozambique)
Hallvard Godal - saxophone, clarinet (Norway)
Putte Johander - bass (Sweden)
Erik Nylander - drums (Sweden)

These 3 world music groups are a part of a "Multiculturalism in music" project. By shaping contemporary and popular culture, the project aims to address the importance of cultural differences to a festival's audience. Since music is a medium unhindered by language differences, it serves as the perfect vessel for promoting the values behind this project, and thanks to new technologies, music is available to the widest public on a global level.
