ZagrebDox’s film selection as part of the Silent Cinema program

The International Documentary Film Festival ZagrebDox is joining INmusic Festival with a selection of engaging, entertaining, and memorable short documentaries. Some of the best international documentaries have been a staple of Zagreb’s cinema scene for over twenty-one years – and now it’s time they head to Jarun! ZagrebDox and INmusic unite in the Silent Cinema program, bringing documentaries from across the globe, with ZagrebDox’s curatorial stamp guaranteeing a remarkable cinematic contribution to Croatia’s largest music festival.

As part of the Silent Cinema program, a new addition to INmusic Festival #17, ZagrebDox will present the following film selections:

Adidas Owns the Reality (Igor Vamos, Keil Orion Troisi)

Germany, Cambodia, The Netherlands, USA / 2024, 21’

Prankster activists Yes Men perform an elaborate hoax to improve conditions for garment workers in the Adidas supply chain. Staging a shocking runway show at Berlin Fashion Week, they use humor and mischief to make the world pay attention to labor and environmental abuses that the massive sportswear brand is trying to hide.

Mermaid (Eilif Bremer Landsend)

Norway, 2023, 14’

Sisilie Skagen is about to become the new captain of the fishing boat she has inherited from her crusty seadog father Bjørn, whose eyes stare at her from a tattoo on her forearm. As she navigates her relationship with her dad, will she manage to find her own feet as a fisherwoman? Interpolating the fishing action with Sisilie and Bjørn’s discussions about their profession and their family relationship, the film explores the daily grinds, joys and hazards of fishing folk’s lives on the wild north-Norwegian coast. The result is a compact miniature of brisk empathy, celebrating and showcasing a traditional industry through the prism of two representative but idiosyncratic individuals. It is a subtle and strikingly visual story of passing the baton.

The Spectacle (Yasmin van Dorp)

Sweden, 2024, 20’

The Spectacle is a short reflective documentary that sheds light on the evolving nature of travel behavior in today’s digital age. Filmed in various locations across South Norway, Lapland, and Turkey, the film unravels the transformation of serene landscapes into bustling tourist attractions. As travelers embark on what they perceive to be unique journeys, their focus has shifted from experiencing the essence of a place to merely capturing its highlights for online sharing. The film exposes the repetitive choreography that defines modern tourism, presenting it as a grand spectacle — a public performance where, in the quest for "authentic" experiences, tourists often go to extreme lengths, sometimes even risking their own lives or the safety of their children.

Reign (David Graudenz)

Austria, Germany, 2024, 11’

While model-making is usually shown from the perspective of the model-makers, Reign takes on the perspective of the models themselves. Rarely is the mundanity of this world interfered with by its gigantic creators, and when it is, their motives seem arbitrary.

Mimara Revisited (Danko Volarić)

Croatia, 2010, 29’

The building of the old Austro-Hungarian Gymnasium School was overnight turned into a museum for the collection of controversial art collector Ante Topić Mimara. The fact that it was dubbed the Louvre of Zagreb clearly indicates the great expectations from it. Today, the Louvre of Zagreb is empty, visitors are scarce. However, various commercial events – fashion shows, art auctions, book presentations, county-club gatherings – record good turnouts. The classical architecture of the Austro-Hungarian school serves as an ideal setting for kitsch events of all sorts.
