Mastodon

Mastodon

One of the most innovative progressive metal bands - Mastodon is the latest addition to theINmusic 2011 line-up. Earlier this month, the band released their live DVD/CD "Live At The Aragon", featuring performance of Crack the Skye in its entirety. They will also be taking part in several European summer festivals, including INmusic.

Mastodon is a sludge/progressive metal band founded in 1999 in Atlanta by guitarist Bill Kelliher, drummer Brann Dailor, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, out of their mutual admiration for the bands such as the Melvins, Black Sabbath, Neurosis and Thin Lizzy.

They released an EP Lifesblood in 2001, followed by their first full-length album Remission. Their conceptual album Leviathan, released in 2004 to much critical acclaim, marked a turning point in their career. The band won Album of the Year awards from Kerrang! And Terrorozer and was named second best by Metal Hammer.

Leviathan was followed by two releases: The Call of the Mastodon, a remastering and remixing of the band's first nine songs, and The Workhorse Chronicles, a DVD of interviews and concert footage, including material from the band's early days. The band's third album, Blood Mountain received a Grammy nomination in the Best Metal Performance category for the song "Colony of Birchmen". Heralded as a masterpiece, Blood Mountain was a worthy follow-up to Leviathan, featuring contributions from Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and the Mars Volta,' Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and Cedric Bixler Zavala.

Mastodon's fourth album Crack the Skye was released on March 24, 2009 and in 2011 the band announced that they were working on a new material. In March 2011 they released a live DVD/CD "Live At The Aragon" and announced that they would perform at a number of European summer festival, including INmusic.
